Google Places Drops Tags and Adds Boost
April 19th, 2011 @ Paul Chaney
Google has announced that they are discontinuing the use of Tags with Places listings. I’m not surprised. I never thought Tags were a useful marketing technique, even though I tried it for a while with my wife’s listing for her home staging business, Home Staging by Amie.
In its place, Google is introducing a new program, called Boost, which is a simplified version of Adwords. The company is even offering $100 credit for businesses with Places listings just to try it out.
The main difference between Boost and Adwords is that Google retains control over bidding and placement. “With Google Boost, simply set up a monthly budget for your ad, and we’ll determine what search keywords trigger your ad based on the categories that you select,” says the promotional copy. As with Adwords, Boost users only pay for the clicks.

Hmmm, I wonder how people will react to not having control of their keywords.

I wonder the same. Had it not been for the $100 credit, I would have taken a pass most likely for that very reason. But, if they’re willing to foot the bill, I’ll give it a shot.

Gee, what will happen with my keyword ‘cowboy?’
Sharing this with my #horsebiz readers. Thank you Paul. Still love my copy of The Digital Handshake.
